What is an apprenticeship?

Ok, let’s tell you what you really want to know – yes, you will get paid as a land-based engineering apprentice. The wage you earn depends on your age and the level of apprenticeship you study.

But the benefits don’t end there.

A great alternative for a 16 – 19 year-old instead of a T Level qualification, higher education or doing a Degree at University, but without the student loan. Apprenticeships are an incredibly effective way of entering the world of work. Combining practical, on the job training with off the job classroom-based study means apprentices get paid for working and learning from highly trained, experienced technicians and receiving tuition from training providers. The ideal combination to gain job-specific, transferrable and all-important life skills.

Learning and development is a core part of apprenticeships, while the introduction to the structure and routine of work helps apprentices to lay a solid foundation for entering the world of employment.

And the cherry on top? Once qualified, you have a guaranteed career, and job, at the end of it.

What could you study on an Engineering Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships in land-based engineering typically have a duration of between 24-48 months, depending on the apprenticeship route that you take:

Land-based Engineering Service Engineer. Level 2 (Available in England)
To study this Level 2 apprenticeship, employers might expect an applicant to have gained 4 GCSEs grade D/E or 2/3 – including English and Maths but this is entirely at the employer’s discretion. However, in some circumstance, Functional Skills Level 1 may be accepted as an GCSE alternative. Talk to the employer

Apprentices will carry out 80% of their training in a work-based environment, whilst the remaining 20% will be undertaken at college.

Knowledge, skills and behaviour gained throughout this apprenticeship include:
- Health & Safety, manual Handling, Abrasive Wheel regulations and legislation relevant to the role
- Chain of command & workplace procedure
- Record keeping
- Workshop practices: identification, application, care and storage of tools and equipment
- Methods of thermally and chemically joining metals and components in the context and machinery & equipment service and maintenance.
- Operating principles of machinery, plant and equipment within the land-based engineering sector.
- Underpinning service, maintenance and repair principles.
- Accessing & interpreting technical data
- Handing over machinery, plant and equipment to the control and use of others
Apprentices are assessed at the end of the apprenticeship with their achievements being recognised and awarded at one of the following grades: Pass, Merit or Distinction

Land-based Engineering service Engineering Technician. Level 3 (Available in England)
In order to study the Level 3 apprenticeship, employers will typically expect an applicant to have gained 4 GCSEs grade D/E or 2/3 – including English and Maths If maths and English are a problem additional tuition is available within the apprenticeship.

Studying for your apprenticeship is varied, moving between classroom learning and practical, structure learning in the workplace. The apprenticeship will provide you with:
- Equivalent Level 3 Diploma in Work Based land-based Engineering
- Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths
- Level 2 Functional Skills in English
Modules also cover:
- Assessing risk
- Organisational procedures
- Customer care
- Engineering calculations
- Advanced engines, transmissions and hydraulics
- Advanced Electronic control and monitoring systems, telemetry, global positioning and the like
- Advanced diagnostics
- F gas and air conditioning Inspection and testing
Apprentices are assessed at the end of the apprenticeship with their achievements being recognised and awarded at one of the following grades: Pass, Merit or Distinction
